David Gateley studied medicine at Downing college, Cambridge and Kings College Hospital, London, qualifying in1984. He trained in General Surgery, orthopaedics and Neurosurgery for five years before starting his career in Plastic Surgery in 1989. As well as operating at Roehampton, The Lister and Guys and St Thomas's Hospitals, David gained a Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship in the USA, receiveing certication of higher surgical training in plastic surgery in 1996
