Market Place Bar & Restaurant serves a variety of dishes inspired by Portuguese, Latin American and Spanish flavours as well as a selection of finger food. They also have a bar area where you can sample a selection of their tempting cocktails. A DJ playing a host of tunes is also provided as additional entertainment.
Was looking for a place for a quick bite before a birthday booking in a bar and remembered always enjoying Market Place for drinks and atmosphere. Hadn't eaten there so we thought we'd give it a go.First the good news. It's very cheap. And has funky DJs if you're there later on. And the decor is fine, though it smells a bit funny downstairs.Sadly the place fails on the food front. My burger was decent enough though giving you 6 chips on the side is just a bit of a tease. Chicken burgers were, again, fine but unexciting. Somehow they managed to screw up the young lady's nachos. How do you do that? Chips, cheese, dips. Chains, whips are optional. The cheese was hard and cold...how did that happen? The chips tasted like cheap tesco ones and were covered in salty, red dust. The dips were a bit pointless too.Our meal arrived one dish short and after a couple of requests for the final dish...which were just ignored...we had to go into it in some detail with a smiling, condescending member of staff. He had shades on top of his head...in the middle of Winter...in London. This annoyed my friend, as she correctly pointed out, there is no sun un London. Eventually he asked if we'd like him to order us ANOTHER one. As if it was our fault? Dear oh dear...I don't normally whinge, but this wasn't really up to muchAnyway.

Market Place plays the role of the west-end little sister, (smaller smarter and a little bit slicker) to Cargo and Cantaloupe in Shoreditch. Another of Cantaloupe Group's multi-functioning watering holes it mainly caters for suits at lunch and after work drinkers. It does however provide a pleasant little stop when you're spending your afternoon shopping and are looking for a late lunch. It has a large heated courtyard and the upstairs has an open kitchen serving the same tapa-esque dishes we're familiar with from Cargo. Salmon tacos, sweet potato fries, albondigas… all for under the 5 pound mark. The upstairs bar is a tad small for how busy it gets which is why it's not the best place to be on a Friday night and in search of a drink… It serves the usual cocktails (I like the Mango Royale with Moet) and has a nice selection of old and new world wines for under £20. The whole place is kitted out with a panelled wood barn look and the signs are branded into the wood, a nice touch. The upstairs has big floor to ceiling windows flooding it with late afternoon light. The downstairs is the underground club that has dj's playing 4 nights a week, with a large representation from Casual the record label associated with Cargo. It's quite intimate with room for dancing, cool booths at the back (which can be reserved) and plasma screens showing wheat fields in the wind? All in all a cool spot but best to be avoided at prime times.

Market Place Bar is located very close to Oxford Circus, just back from the hustle and bustle of the Oxford Street crowds. It is a busy place during the week for office workers and on the Saturday afternoon we were there it was busy with tired shoppers in need of refreshment.Although we didn't eat there, the menu looked interesting and the food being delivered to people sitting near us looked tasty. It was a relaxing place to sit and gossip. No doubt it goes off during the evenings and on a warmer days the outdoor tables would be fought over I am sure.

When in the west end on a Friday and meeting up with friends who work in and around regent street this is one place thats good for a first drink or two. Positives include Budvar on tap. In the basement theres some nice cavey areas to sit down and the tunes can be good. Hard to miss on Friday nites as its the bar with the masses standing outside as they can't fit inside especially in the summertime
