• Geales - left us £68 poorer and still hungry

  A friend and I ate at Geales in March 09 and it was very bad value indeed. When I ordered the £12 fish pie I expected a freshly cooked portion big enough to be a proper meal. What I got was a 4"x4" dish that had been microwaved and whose contents, once turned out, were little bigger than a starter. I spent another £2.95 on a portion of beans and got 15 of them, cut in half to make 30 or so bit. So that was 10p for each half bean. My companion had sole which was ok but small at £16.50 but spent another £2.95 on a side order of new potatoes - and got just six of them. so that was 50p per spud. And they were very small. The rest of the meal had the same theme - we got charged for every little thing. A bowl of olives was £2, bread and butter was £1.25 and water was £3.50 a bottle. Worst value of all was the cheese at the end. That cost £5.50 and included three small slices of bread and five thin slices of cheese.So, in the end, we'd had a small sole, small fish pie, some vegetables, cheese and some water - but the total came to £68!. Thank goodness we skipped the starters and the wine. But we were still very hungry at the end.Perhaps the final insult lay in the service charge of 12.5%. We paid this believing it would go to the staff, as implied in the word "service" but on checking with the manager discovered it goes to the owners. The staff are on near-minimum wages. So don't go is the best advice. But if you do then pay the tip in cash!

• Not as great as it used to be

  Having been to the original Geales I was looking forwrad to trying the new revamped restaurant and was nicely surpirsed. The design is really cool but simple and the service excellent. The food was also excellent in terms of quality but I was quite surpirsed at how small all the portions were eg 3 of us had chips and we thought it was a portion for 1, or 2 at the most. All in all I recommend it and will be back but you do have to order a lot to fill up, which of course adds to the bill.

  I have visited the restaurant on several occasions previously and mostly found the food cooked expertly,however I again visited on the 2 May .And had haddock in batter ,the batter looked great but when I opened it up it was full of watery substance,I complained and the waitress went to see the chef he sent it back to me with the comments its fine ,I sent it back again with the comment you eat it then.After several consersations with other custemer looking on they reluctantly agreed to rplace the meal .This time I had cod although eatable I felt that it still contained too much water ,I expect the cod to be white and fluffy not greay and watery.I hope that is not too much to ask .Has anyone else had the same complaint I

• Reopened at last, but keep hold your breath

  I had been waiting with baited breath for the institution of Geals to reopen. I was disappointed; the fish inside the battered rocks was lovely, but no fish and chips was worth this price. The restaurant was all style and no content. Finally the staffing was weird, loads of serving people who failed to notice anything and there appeared to be one person simply to stand around looking well, standing aroundish (they did nothing).
