Cheap American Apparel T Shirt Printing an honest opinion.
Every week we get loads of enquiries asking us to supply and screen print onto American Apparel T-Shirts. They're great looking t-shirts, with fantastic sexy marketing, a plausible ethical message to FREE L.A.'s Hispanic working community and above all, they've got trendy shops in all the right High Streets. The very popular 2001 Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T-Shirt comes in 30 colours & 7 sizes and costs a whooping £13 in their shops. The wholesale price is much cheaper: a case (96 pieces one size, one colour) of say white, cost £2.30 +vat each, that's £253.92, + £40 AIR FREIGHT FROM L.A. a grand total of £299.92 for 96 white t-shirts, or £3.12 per t-shirt before you've even put a print on it. (These prices are based on the current temporary VAT rate of 15%). But here's the hard bit to chew. You've paid £3.12 for each t-shirt, that has been flown from L.A.. (It'll take at least a week to get from "downtown L.A.", to LAX then to LHR (terminal 5??), then customs clearance, then onto us for printing. If you're buying American Apparel for ethical reasons, the CO2 emissions in getting them to your door, put you closer to Pol Pot and Adolf Hitler than Al Gore. If you're buying them for the AA label, then make sure you're buying them in quantity, over 400 items, otherwise it's not economically & 'emission ethically' worth it. Alternatively Continental Clothing offer a smaller range of colours & styles, but the quality is slightly better and a slightly heavier combed cotton. N03 Mens Classic JERSEY T-Shirt 165gsm N11. Women's Slim-Fit JERSEY T-Shirt 155gsm (Their neck label only has a small 6mm square "size" label, and the Continental logo is part of the washing instruction labels on the inside seem). The Continental shirts above start at £3.10 PRINTED and there is UK stock, shipped in by sea and made in Turkey using premium cotton, grown in the middle east, NOT from Uzbekistan. Screen Printing From you desktop to your T Shirts.
Make sure that your design is really sellable! We all have a favorite T-Shirt! It's fresh out the wash & back on your body before it's dry. It's been to all the gigs & parties with you and if you died tomorrow, your mates would bury you in it! That's the T-Shirt, Stop the Press! have always aimed to produce for their customers. It's why we're still happy printing T-Shirts & merchandising 20 years after we first started. But there are a number of tricks to successfully selling your gear. 1) Design, Design, Design! A great design, with clear images, tasteful gradients & colours always gets the cash flying... (a plain black print onto a white t-shirt never works!)?+ Artwork saved in Illustrator (AI, EPS or PDF) is great.+ 2) A good quality T-Shirt, with a complimentary base colour, good sizing & a nice neck line or style wins every time. (Check out the super soft, sheer sexy, yet tough wearing BAMBOO t-shirts made byhttp://www.continentalclothing.com/ ) 3) Make sure you've got somewhere to sell them. Your BigCartel, MySpace, Facebook site helps, but if you're a band, make sure you set-up a creative display to sell you T-Shirts, badges & CDs from. Clear pricing, discounts for multi-buys & pack prices all help.?+ as does a sexy girlfriend walking around the gig in a strategically ripped t-shirt! + 4) Clear instructions to you printer. Any professional screen printer should offer a way of enhancing your design, when it's printed onto a T-Shirt.?+ Use multi textured inks & always Add your website to the back or bum print! + 5) How many should you order? I always recommend stocking as few t-shirts as possible (I'm the only person who does.) It's pointless stocking 1000s of t-shirts, that you're unlikely to sell in a year, even if you got a really good price for them.?+ Order enough to get you through, either your event, tour or first month.+?You can always come back for more, if you sell out, whilst taking your customers money & guaranteeing that they'll have a custom made shirt within the week! 6) Beware of buying from people without print experience, you'd be surprised at how many T-Shirts get printed badly in China & delivered in the U.K a week later. You can pick up a cheap screen printer or laser printer on eBay for a next to nothing, but the quality American built machines are strictly trade only! This matters for colour registration & quality workflow. 7) Delivery. Make sure that your merchandise is delivered at least a couple of days before the event or gig. Many T-Shirt printers leave it to the last day, then they're in the hands of delivery companies & excuses! 8) Don't store your box(es) of merchandise under a table at the gig or event - one spilt pint can turn into a disaster!?+ Keep them on a pallet & bring some bin liners, just in case!+
