Asmara Restaurant is a family-run restaurant serving Eritrean cuisine, with meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes available.
I'd heard good things about it and following a trip to Ethiopia last year was hankering for the food. I know this is Eritrean but there are a distinct lack of Ethiopean restaurants in South London so to my untrained western palate, Eritrean is much the same. We got there about 7 and the place was empty, but it soon filled up once we got comfy in the low chairs by the window. The waiter let us take our time, we chose Dora Wat, a lamb one he recommended and some Shiro (chickpeas), which was plenty for 2. They don't stock 'local' beers so we had to make do with the usual fare. The food was delicious, just as nice as the 'real thing' and they were more than happy to give us more injera. We left full and happy. My friend had never eaten this type of food before and is begging me to take him back. The price was very reasonable for 2 people.
I had a delicious meal here with a couple of friends on a Sunday evening. The restaurant has comfortable 'basket' chairs and tables although there are quite a lot of them in there! We chose four vegetarian dishes between three of us and there was just the right amount. The dishes are served on a large plate with several large round Injera breads on it. You eat by tearing off the bread (with your right hand!) and scooping up the yummy food with it. My favourite was something called Shiro, a sort of red chickpea paste. Scrummy. We finished off with a round of coffee and tea. I really love this style of coffee (thick and very black), and Asmara has the traditional coffee ceremony (google it) to make it extra special. We even got some complimentary popcorn.

Found the restaurant by chance and became a "regular" there. The food is served in large platters where the meat or vegetables are served on top of a soft pancake-like bread. You tear a bit of the bread with your hands and use it to grab the meat or vegetables that are scattered on the platter. Service is basic and friendly, the 4th star is earned by the original and tasty food. Expect to spend about £10-15 per person, plus drinks.
